Can RadioPotato.com Interview the band RUSH? I say YES!

17

“No one follows someone who sits on the sidelines.  Never.” -Bob Lefsetz

I woke up this morning to find this phrase in my e-mail inbox, courtesy of Bob Lefsetz e-mail subscription.  Popular musical ranter, Bob Lefsetz’ blog was recommended to me by social media/music business mastermind, Tony Caporale.  This particular phrase hit home.  Let me explain why…

If anyone remotely knows me, they will know that I am a huge Rush fan.  I mean…HUGE.  Why do I love the legendary progressive rock band, RUSH aside from them being a ridiculously killer band?  Here are 3 good reasons:

  1. First concert ever. Roll the Bones tour.  Madison Square Garden. 1991. I was 17 years old. (late bloomer, huh? )
  2. First time I fell in love.  “Ghost of a Chance” was playing. Jones Beach, NY. He held my hand. I got butterflies.
  3. First and ONLY time I’ve had front row assigned seats. 7/22/08. I caught Alex Lifeson’s guitar pick. Picture gallery here.

I knew that when I got a miraculous hook-up of front row tickets two years ago, that anything after that would just plain suck.  So when I discovered that Rush was embarking on the Time Machine Tour where they would be playing ALL of their breakthrough 1991 album, Moving Pictures from start to finish, my stomach immediately tied into six knots.  Not only do I need to get tickets reeeeeeeeeeeeally close (like front row), but my ambitious-ass decided that…what if I could, dare I say, interview the band?

“No one follows someone who sits on the sidelines.  Never.” -Bob Lefsetz….ooooo, there is that phrase again.  Must. Do. Something.

I know it’s a tall reach, but I don’t know any other way TO reach.  Especially now when music bloggers are overthrowing the traditional means of definitive musical influence, Rolling Stone Magazine, etc. (um, did you see that Alicia Keys is looking for her own blogger on Monster.com?).  Good music blogs are now the Mighty Voice of the music business.  What would RadioPotato.com bring to the Rush community?

  • Rush has predominantly male fans. What about a woman interviewing them? Speaking of which, Laurie Brown interviewed the band recently in honor of them being inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.  If she can do it…
  • Maybe I can do a tarot reading from my Tarot Cards for Dummies book?  Their future will be predicted, courtesy of Radiopotato.com!  You heard it here, folks.
  • Known to be deep into insane nerdery, maybe I could beat the band in a game of Dungeons & Dragons?  Not that I’ve ever played it or anything…
  • RadioPotato’s interview could be the recognition that FINALLY gets Rush inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 🙂

So here’s the deal.  if anyone has any connections with the band, connections with  Ticketmaster or Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, GA, or has access to front row tickets, backstage passes, whatever, please contact me.  If you don’t know anyone, I’ll ask you to kindly Repost, Retweet, and Share this article.  I don’t pull favors a lot but for this “cause,” I will exhaust all resources to bring an incredible interview for you…and hopefully, introduce new fans to such an iconic and influential band.

Stephen Colbert Report had a hilarious segment to record Rush FAILING at playing their own music on Rock Band.  Check this out:

Rush’s drummer, Neil Peart is arguably one of the best drummers to have ever lived.  His four limbs operate completely separate of each other in perfect precision.  Check out this brilliant computer-generated re-enactment of Neil playing the famous instrumental song “YYZ:”

“No one follows someone who sits on the sidelines. Never.” -Bob Lefsetz

So for me, complacency is my biggest enemy. No sidelines. I need to get on the field…

  5. Rick Becker says:

You need to start compiling your list of interview questions just in case. Or just in case I win the meet and greet 😉

Of course, Stephen Colbert’s producer asked the best interview question of all time for Rush:

“Do you ever get tired of kicking so much ass?”

  6. Ironshef says:

I’m pulling for you, Allison, and certainly happy to spread the word. Good luck!

  7. Allison Rizk says:

That would be awesome to get the interview, and a women that into Rush, freakin awesome. I have started a group on facebook to campaign for Rush getting into the hall of fame. The group is called ” Rush The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame” please join and spread it around the more people the louder of a noise we can make.

  13. Heather McGoldrick (Corcoran) says:

I loved your very sweet story about the three reasons you love Rush. For me it reminds of the most magical times of my life. Rush’s music has inspired me in so many ways; no one can compare to them. This comes from a hard-core Rush chickie… : )

I sure do hope you get the interview. Rush doesn’t care about being in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, their fans do. I am actually more impressed with them not caring. Rush is my all time favorite band. Loved the documentary. Give Allison a chance. Good luck speaking with them. I couldn’t speak when I met Geddy Lee. I gotta live with that. I was like uhh….

Rush: Love your newest songs, Caravan, BU2B and every single song ever created. You’ll always create music that lifts my spirits and lyrics that touch my heart. Never really understood why Caress was so unrecognized. I love it and I have always gotten it. My children are coming to see their first concert ever and of course it’s going to be Rush.

Hope you get the interview Allison, you certainly deserve it.

Thanks for all your great music. Heather

  14. Rush says:

It will be awesome to see RUSH perform MOVING PICTURES in its entirety. I was able to see Rush 3 times on the original Moving Pictures tour, Max Webster opened for them in Louisville Ky, It was so awesome!! Thanks Ticketwood.com for offering me discounted Rush Tickets . They were using a movie screen behind them that projected really cool images during the show. They were so far ahead of everyone else at the time… and still are.

  15. Allison Rizk says:

That’s amazing that you’ve seen them that many times on the Moving Pictures tour. Jealous! Thanks for your comment. Still working on the interview. Do you know any connections? 😉

  16. Dave Crout says:

Have to tried the conventional method – contacting the band’s management directly? Yes, I know they get a ton of email and phone calls, especially when a new album is released and a new tour announced… but it’s certainly worth a try. The more often they see the name RadioPotato, the more it will ring a bell. But certainly your plan to back-channel should continue. You probably know someone that knows somebody who’s friend can make it happen.
Good luck, I truly do hope you succeed. I would very much like to read your interview.
