Rockstars: Do NOT Go To Therapy!
In a recent interview with Elvis Costello for Sundance Channel’s “Spectacle” show, Bruce Springsteen made a bold statement. He said “Musicians are always bothered! Something bothers GOOD musicians every single day” so they can keep writing those great songs (paraphrasing).
He’s so right! Since the majority of love songs are so often break-up songs, it’s a safe bet that musicians have to always have some drama going on to continue writing. Remember when Alanis Morrissette released that happy album after the groundbreaking 1995 album Jagged Little Pill was released? Jagged’s “You Oughta Know” was the angry woman’s anthem and made Alanis into a cultural icon. After she went to therapy, got happy, and started releasing peaceful and more enlightened albums, her whole fan base dropped off and dropped Alanis into oblivion.
So in essence, we PAY artists so they do NOT go to therapy. Keep seeing live shows, downloading their music, spreading the good music to your friends, tweeting about it, etc. That way, musicians will get their empty and temporary satisfaction from their fans and continue to be miserable offstage and write great music.
