Music Junkies’ Top 10 Songs of 2010 – Part Uno

December is a month to reflect, relish, and re-live some of our best and worst moments captured by the music of our time. In annual tradition, I’ve reached out to some of the most influential people in music and asked them to list their favorite picks for the year.  Of course, this is a selfish ploy to shine a light on the greatest music hiding in the shadows.  Funny, the Top 10 Song picks from 2009 really did become big hits this year.  Let’s look into the crystal ball and see what’s next.

From folk to R&B to dance to metal, it’s all there with music linked.

RHIANNON CLARKbooking agent for legendary music venue, Eddie’s Attic. If you’re an emerging musician, this is the ear you hope to bend.

  1. Sam Quinn + Japan Ten – “Gun”
  2. Kaiser Cartel – “Okay”
  3. The Walkmen – “Blue as your Blood” (video embedded below)
  4. Alejandro Escovedo – “Anchor”
  5. The Civil Wars – “Barton Hollow”
  6. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – “Medicine”
  7. David Bazan – “Curse Your Branches”
  8. The Mynabirds – “Let The Record Go”
  9. Laura Meyer – “Blackberry Lane”
  10. Brandi Carlile – “Impossible Sorrow” Live at Eddie’s Attic

JAKE COOKInsanely opinionated creator of streaming radio station run by a bunch of sarcastic, A-holes, Effin 88.5 with a growing following on FacebookJake (alter ego = Mr. Sex…calm down, ladies.  He’s married) decided to put his own spin on his metal leaning list:

(In no particular order)
1.  Toadies – “Dead Boy Boogie” from the album Feeler.  This is the album that was supposed to be the follow up to 1995’s Rubberneck. “Dead Boy” has all the Toadies trademarks:  big riffs, churning bass, and shrieking lead guitars, not to mention the unmistakable vocal stylings of frontman Todd Lewis.
2.  Helmet-  title track from Seeing Eye Dog.  Helmet rarely disappoints (Monochrome being the only exception), so I was glad to see Page Hamilton and Co. released an album in 2010.  After 21 years, these guys are still the kings of chunky-riffdoms this side of Black Sabbath.
3.  Deftones- “Rocket Skates–  Guns. Razors. Knives.  The Deftones never disappoint.
4.  Slash (featuring Ian Astbury)- “Ghost”–  This song takes the best parts of GnR and the Cult.  If you don’t like this, you’re an enemy of rock ‘n roll.
5.  Tanks- “Solar Sailor” The stoner rock outfit from Memphis, TN would probably be upset that I called them an “outfit”.  Tanks brings intensity without taking themselves too seriously…a fun listen. (video embedded below)
6.  Kings of Leon- “No Money”Just kidding.  Kings of Leon is terrible.  I wish they had “No Money” and therefore no means to make any more shitty music.
7.  The Black Angels- “River of Blood”–  Psychadelic Rock from Austin, TX.  The guys know how to capture a new, yet oddly vintage sound.  Heavy, but still pretty (without being happy).  Happy + Rock = Bad…in case you needed a lesson in Rock Math.
8.  MonstrO- “Anchors Up”–  The Atlanta based band features members of Torche and Bloodsimple.  “Anchors Up” combines elements heard in music by Open Hand, CKY, and Cave-in.  If you know anything about music, that description should make you check these guys out immediately.
9.  Southern Train Gypsy- “Gunslinger” Dallas’s STG sounds like Yomsemite Sam auditioned for Clutch.  Heavy guitars, bellowing vocals…Texas style.  Dig it.
10.  Sevonica– “Needles”- Sevonica blends hard rock with pop sensibilities….and I don’t hate it.  In fact, the vocalist is a throwback to the true alternative of the late 80s/early 90s.  It’s a good juxtaposition with the aggressive guitars.  An easy listen…read:  girls might like it, too.  They won’t hate it, at least.

NICK TAPP Repeat offender from last year’s music junkies’ list, Nick is my musical brother and Atlanta radio’s favorite ginger.  Gravitating towards roots rock, his list never disappoints (well, never disappoints me and since it’s my website and all…).

In no particular order except for the song in the #1 position:

10 – Mt. Desolation – “State of our Affairs”
9 – Whitley – “I Remember”
(video below)
8 – Michael Jackson ft. Akon – “Hold My Hand”
7 – Marcus Foster – “I Don’t Mind”
6 – Phoenix – “1901”
5 – Au – “Boute”
4 – The Temper Trap – “Sweet Disposition”
3 – La Roux – “Bulletproof”
(Seriously, Nick? I love this song but I am a GIRL! :))
2 – Justin Timberlake ft. Matt Morris – “Hallelujah [LIVE}”
1 – Mumford and Sons- “White Blank Page”

TINA CIRANNI Another appearance from a familiar face from ’09’s list, music zealot and artistic Tina delivers a list of songs that are quirky and fun.

1.  The National – “Bloodbuzz Ohio”
2.  Menomena – “Five Little Rooms”
3.  How to Destroy Angels – “The Space in Between”
4.  Silversun Pickups – “Lazy Eye” (2007) but got hooked on it this year
5.  Florence + the Machine – “Cosmic Love”
6. The Postal Service (2003) – “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight”
7.  Christina Perri – “Jar of Hearts”
8.  Modeselektor – “The White Flash” (feat. Thom Yorke)
9.  Arcade Fire – “Suburban War”
10.  Rufus Wainwright (2004) – “The Art Teacher”
Crookers – “Embrace the Martian” (Seiji Acid Remix) – Feat Kid Cudi – (I dare you to not dance to this one!)
