Grace Potter Live is like Rock and Roll Porn: A Review

15

WHAT Grace Potter does onstage should be illegal. Feeling a little embarrassed watching Grace violently fling her head back and smile in ecstasy during her entire performance, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals rocked Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse last night (7/23/2010).

Known for her grainy voice, swamp-rock blues and gospel music influence, Grace’s sexual energy could have inspired the sold-out crowd to collectively start smoking.  Opening band Blues and Lasers sounded like a foghorn of straight-up 70′s rock and roll and ultimately, three members of that band make up The Nocturnals.  Grace ignited the stage by popping out in a little rock-n-roll peek-a-boo dress and went straight to work belting her opening song “Sweet Hands” from her B-3 organ.  Driving right into the latest album’s first single “Tiny Light,” you got the feeling that this 27-year old blondie was probably viewed as inappropriate when she was singing on school stages at 12 years old.  Well, my mind wanders…

Anyway, she closed with a hard-rockin’ “Medicine” and the energy in the crowd was palpable.  Hands in the air, fists pumping (NOT Jersey Shore-style), people singing along.  Grace went bananas onstage.  In fact, here’s a clip of the full-band banging on the drums during “Medicine” and Grace’s full-on stage freak-out:

With two encores, Grace brought her own bluesy version of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” playing with the insanely talented Nocturnals.  Finally closing out with Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” leading into my favorite “Nothing But The Water – Parts 1 and 2.”  Whew, WHO is she channeling onstage?  HOW is this rock-and-roll porn only $15?

Grace has a way of drawing you in.  She’s a rock-and-roll sexual spectacle onstage.  She’s a total bad-ass guitar player (even rockin’ an old school Flying V) with a voice that can exquisitely wake the dead.  Dirty swamp rock and blues and the Hammond organ adds an otherworldly soul you don’t expect from a white chick from Vermont.  Guys love her because not only can she REALLY rock, but she’s a sexy blond, too.   Girls love her because she totally rocks and most of her songs are about love lost.

I kept wondering about what she’s like offstage.  Is she smoldering in her love life or more demure?  Is she in-your-face in person?  Where did she learn how to play like that?  Why do I even care?

That’s the answer.  When a show leaves you with more questions than you came in with, the artist has succeeded onstage.  The mystery, the energy, the show-stopping sex appeal, and the balls-out event that Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are, will keep you crawling back for more.  And damn, she must have had 45 orgasms with all of us watching her.

Now that I’ve brought some of last night to you, you’ll need to go see her on your own.  Check out her tour schedule here.  And make sure you bring protection.  It’s gonna be a wild night!

Great review, Allison. This is ON POINT. Show in Isle of Palms on Tuesday was exactly what you describe here. I never get tired of watching her performance. Absolutely outstanding!

Was so bummed to see Paste Magazine’s mediocre review of the new album…I wonder if they’ve ever seen her live. *sigh*

  2. Sarah says:

I love the review! Hate that I missed it! :(

  3. Stacy says:

I ♥ Grace and the Nocturnals. Who could review that album poorly? Um, add that and the live show. All winners!!

  4. bbryon says:

I’ve been lucky enough to see her 3 times so far. Bonnaroo 2006 (Grace Potter & the Nocturnals were Bonnie Raitt’s pick for must see upcoming artists), Atlanta when the Woodbrothers opened for her 2008, and Rothbury 2009. Allison that means between you and me we’ve seen her orgasm about 180 times, and that’s only 4 shows (have you seen her before?).

I will always see them at any opportunity. Glad you enjoyed the show!

seriously, she makes me feel guilty for enjoying her music (I went to catholic high school). i usually hate it when someone is so obviously using their sexuality to draw you in, but when you can actually wail it seems like a natural extension of rock and roll (compare to Katy Perry, Britney Spears, etc.).

by the way, if anyone hasn’t seen the “Paris” video, check it out…it’s pretty much NSFW.

  6. Ironshef says:

I haven’t seen Grace, but this write up makes me want to quit my job and become a freakin’ roadie for her and the Nocturnals.

You’ve got an amazing talent, Allison, of capturing the energy these shows exude and splashing it all over the page. Captivating, for sure. We’re all better for having your blog and anyone who doesn’t think so is so completely devoid of #bryonness that their opinion is inconsequential.

It’s really our honor to have you as the inaugural honorary Bryon.

P.S. – I’m still working on a certificate of authenticity.

  7. Allison Rizk says:

Wow, Bryon! I’m flattered on so many levels. Thank you for your kind compliments and I will gladly accept the letter of authenticity and wear the badge of Bryoness proudly. :) Please keep letting me know what songs are your favorite. Feedback will bring you more of what you like!

  8. I saw them open for The Avett Brothers in Charlottesville, VA last month. I was already a fan of her music… and of how attractive she is, obviously, but when I saw them live I was blown away, as were my fellow concert lovers. If it’s possible to be that sexually charged and still pure, that’s Grace. I don’t know what it is about her. For a lot of female performers, if they use sexuality as a selling point, it is their only selling point, but for Grace it’s just a natural extension of who she is, which is first and foremost a dynamic performer. She has incredible vocals that are at least as good live as in the studio, is a skilled songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, and overall just a powerhouse. I’m almost in shock that she isn’t the most famous woman in the world already. Anyone who entered that concert not knowing who she was left that concert as a bona fide fan.

  9. Shannon Keegan says:

Her voice and they way she performs is what draws me into her videos and so on! She is hot, she is… in what I think a lot of us shy, and modest women would love to be like!

  10. Sarah says:

Love this review. I’ve been going to their shows since 2004 – she’s glammed up a lot (blond hair, sparkly dresses, etc) but her performances are as intense and mesmerizing as ever. My brother’s gf made a chocolate sculpture of the Flying V and the band LOVED it. They actually smashed it on NYE after the show and ate it, which Emily was so excited about (usually people just throw away the sculptures).

  11. Allison Rizk says:

Sarah, I love all the stories! AND I loved the insider info on FB e-mail. Scandalous! :)

  12. Joe says:

Saw Grace last night in Spokane and it was the best concert since, well, the last time I saw her. My daughter intro’d me to her early stuff three years ago, but it wasn’t until this past summer when we saw her at Lilith Fair at the Gorge that we fell in love with her and her kickass stage performance. She was on a satellite stage at the Gorge, and then later did an impromptu acoustic set at a sponsor lounge. The venue last night was larger–about 1500–but we had great seats, when we sat in them. A lot of Spokane wasn’t really sure who she was before last night, but after a nearly two-hour set, they sure knew when they left.

  13. Brian Cassidy says:

To answer your question of what she is like off stage: really down to earth and gracious. i was lucky enough to get hooked up to meet her b/f the HOB show in Cleveland on 6/4/11. She spent a good 5 minutes chatting with my wife and I and was willing to take as many pictures as we wanted. Oh yeah that show was awesome too!
