ATTWATER INTERVIEW: Country’s Rising Duo
Edgy, innovative, risk taking, and fresh. These are some words that country music’s new duo Attwater’s fans use to describe their music. My journalistic instincts wanted more. Edgy because Sacramento isn’t exactly known to crank out country artists but ATTWATER is forming a style that hasn’t been heard before. Erika Attwater’s powerfully soulful belt has equal parts righteous sass and crippling vulnerability. She’s got no twang in her voice but the songwriting is undeniably relatable and the fiddles cloak their music into a fresh serving of southern-tinged music.
Discovered last winter by mega-producer Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars, Switchfoot, Ten out of Tenn) via Twitter, Erika Attwater and Jonathan Richards weren’t entirely sure of how the newly formed duo Attwater’s career would pan out. Through a fortuitous click of a link, Charlie’s vision took over and invited the two to Nashville to start what CP is known for: organic development. Over the course of this summer, this happened:
- “Never Gonna Happen” video directed by Jeremy Cowart gets released in June, 2011
- “New Life” is co-written by legendary country songwriter, Luke Laird (Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans)
- CMT Videos picks it up immediately – fans respond in droves
- Attwater gets signed to CAA
- Attwater is opening for WILLIE NELSON for three dates in September, 2011
Nice Summer! I packed up and drove to Nashville where they have been writing and recording with Twenty Ten Music and got to interview these rising stars in August. A few things to note:
- Erika Attwater has a background as an administrative assistant
- Jonathan Richards is married and a father of three boys
- Keep your eyes out for an Attwater Christmas EP
- If you hear another male voice in the background, that’s my boyfriend Chris who forgot that I was the one interviewing them.
But he asked great questions so it’s all good.
