Hostess with the Mostest: Americana in the Park
There are a few unexpected milestones that I’ve hit in my years on this earth. Unexpected, because I’m not necessarily asking for it, but it just fortuitously fell in my lap. Here are 3 I’m quite proud of, and all documented on RadioPotato.com.
1 – I won DJ of the Year in college 2x. and SENIOR DJ of the year my final year. Was I good? HELL no! We had a 10 watt station and zero listeners. But I was passionate. For a sample of my horrendously hilarious WKNJ-FM DJ stylings circa 1993. click HERE.
2 – A PR firm reached out to me this past June to interview Amos Lee. He’s kind of a big deal in my world and that was super thrilling and he was very down-to-earth. Plus, he was kinda flirty afterwards which had me spinning for days. Disclaimer: I do have an irreplaceably outstanding boyfriend so no action but flattering, nonetheless.
3- One of my favorite places in Atlanta, the iconic Park Tavern that overlooks my other favorite place in Atlanta, the iconic Piedmont Park, asked me to host a new live music series. Atlanta’s AMERICANA IN THE PARK.
What is Americana in the Park? It’s a new venture hosted by Park Tavern that will have the best mix of live folk/bluegrass/country/rock blended into what is popularly known as Americana. Kicking it off with a UGA/Americana in the Park party kick-off on 9/3 , this is the Athens-based line-up for the first show:
Line up: 6pm Sam Sniper
7:30 pm Matt Hudgins and the Shit Hot Country Band
8pm Kick off for UGA vs. Boise State
9:30 pm Dodd Ferrelle
Every week afterwards, it will be on a Wednesday night. Perfect for a nice wine-down atmosphere (all glasses of wine are 1/2 off), great for a date or just to hang out and chill through our final show in 2011 on November 2nd. We’ve got some great acts lined up. Nashville’s Marc Scibilia, Rolling Stone Magazine’s Jamestown Revival, Atlanta’s celebrated premiere bluegrass band Dappled Grays, and Mumford & Sons’ endorsed Seven Handle Circus are just a few of the acts confirmed. All the shows will stream live online (watch it worldwide, peeps!) and I’ll be interviewing many of the bands and will be published on the website. Super. stoked.
I’ve never hosted before but tend to always say something when there’s a mic in my hand. I’m a little nervous and really hope I can do justice to these hard-working talented musicians. Here’s what I do know. More than anything, I love to share great artists that deserve to be heard. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating in one of Atlanta’s destination treasures and discover amazing music you can’t live without. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NEW YORK CITY AMERICANA/BLUES BAND THE GOTHAM ROOTS ORCHESTRA (GRO) RELEASE THEIR SELF-TITLED DEBUT CD/EP ON NONO/NONA RECORDINGS.
CONTACT: Dana Whitco/Ben Yudkovitz @ Rock Fire Management • Email: gothamrootsorchestra@gmail.com • Website: gothamrootsorchestra.com • (917) 502-2519
THE GOTHAM ROOTS ORCHESTRA’s self-titled debut EP is a collection of live takes (no overdubs) completed in one five-hour recording session, plus the field recording of the final track, Mighty Jesus. From The Band-influenced strains of Goodman Hero, the guitar boogie of Mississippi Bound, the apocalyptic roadhouse cover of Steely Dan’s Black Friday, the bilingual blues-rock of Dark Stone (Ay De Mi), through the battle hymn strains of Mighty Jesus, GOTHAM ROOTS’ unique musical and lyrical poetry defines this debut.
THE GOTHAM ROOTS ORCHESTRA (GRO) first formed in New York City in the late summer of 2012 at INTAR Theater in Hell’s Kitchen. Led by guitarist/composer/producer (and Guggenheim Fellow/Smithsonian Folklife Fellow) Cristian Amigo, the bilingual GRO are music veteranos who use American roots musics, bad-ass guitars, and ready-to-stomp beats as a reference point for their chingón sound. Featuring anti-stupid songs about regular folks, dogs, comadres, veterans, black coffee, villains, capitalists, heroes, La Migra, repo men, SEX of course, and the NOW Americano life.
GRO is: Cristian Amigo – guitars, vocals; Angela Babin – guitars, tres, vocals); David Gould – bass; Diablo (Gonzalo Martinez de la Cotera) – drums
“I describe the sound as Americana, blues and beyond. One moment a slow, sex-infused blues, then a dark, raucous version of Steely Dan’s Black Friday. It’s like that.”
– Cristian Amigo (GRO guitarist, singer)
“GRO’s songs and grooves are a tribute to the American roots music and musicians that inspire us.”
– Angela Babin (GRO guitarist)”
PRE-RELEASE REVIEWS:
“ GOODMAN HERO a John Lennon-inspired blues rock tune has all the gusto of the arena rock anthems that brought the house down when rock-n-roll was rock-n-roll. MISSISSIPPI BOUND boasts a rollicking road trip song sure to get people up and dancing. The early-era ZZ Top gritty guitar blues pumps and pops in all the right places.”

“This is the best roots band I’ve heard in years! You can’t help but know that they are going places. Great songs, Great players, Great grooves. I love GRO!”
