Soundtrack of a Broken Heart

16

Drive-bys, Facebook stalking, inappropriate sobbing, therapy-inducing self-doubt, random rebound hook-ups, break-ins, drunk texting, embarassing pleas begging to get back together…oy vay!  Break-ups will make you go from Zero –> Crazy in no time flat.

Not that I would EVER do such things (ahem!)  but you get the point.  We’ve all done ridiculously embarassing things to kill the pain of a broken heart.  In fact, according to Fluffylovey’s poll, Heartbreak is totally popular in 2010. Fluffylovey?  Totally credible.

My own affair with heartbreak took permanent residence for a good five years straight.  At least you couldn’t say I was a quitter.  So I put together an amazing playlist of songs that made such a huge impact on my healing heart.

From songs I would play as my bedtime lullaby (“Closer” by Travis) to hopeful anthems like Brendan James “All I Can See,” this playlist was my unconditional best friend and now, it can be yours, too.  Not to mention The Script’s gut-wrenching and poignant song “Breakeven” is one of the best written songs of all time (lyrics below).   And I’m REALLY excited to share the first song on the playlist, new artist Jesse Ruben’s “Too Tired.”

Oh, and now when I hear these songs, I have a very different reaction.  I call my amazing boyfriend immediately and thank him for making all that pain worthwhile.

The Script – “Breakeven” lyrics

(Songwriters: Frampton, Andrew Marcus; Kipner, Stephen Alan; O’donoghue, Daniel John; Sheehan, Mark Anthony)

I’m still alive but I’m barely breathing
Just prayin’ to a god that I don’t believe in
Cos I got time while she got freedom
Cos when a heart breaks no it don’t break even

Her best days will be some of my worst
She finally met a man that’s gonna put her first
While I’m wide awake she’s no trouble sleeping
Cos when a heart breaks no it don’t breakeven… even… no

What am I supposed to do when the best part of me was always you,
And what am I supposed to say when I’m all choked up that you’re ok
I’m falling to pieces, yeah,
I’m falling to pieces

They say bad things happen for a reason
But no wise words gonna stop the bleeding
Cos she’s moved on while I’m still grieving
And when a heart breaks no it don’t breakeven even… no

What am I gonna to do when the best part of me was always you,
And what am I supposed to say when I’m all choked up that you’re ok
I’m falling to pieces, yeah,
I’m falling to pieces, yeah,
I’m falling to pieces
(One still in love while the other ones leaving)
I’m falling to pieces
(Cos when a heart breaks no it don’t breakeven)

Oh you got his heart and my heart and none of the pain
You took your suitcase, I took the blame.
Now I’m try’na make sense of what little remains ooh
Cos you left me with no love and no love to my name.

I’m still alive but I’m barely breathing
Just prayin’ to a god that I don’t believe in
Cos I got time while she got freedom
Cos when a heart breaks no it don’t break
No it don’t break
No it don’t break even no

What am I gonna do when the best part of me was always you and
What am I suppose to say when I’m all choked up that you’re ok
(Oh glad your okay now)
I’m falling to pieces yeah
(Oh I’m glad your okay)
I’m falling to pieces yeah
(One still in love while the other ones leaving)
I’m falling to pieces
(Cos when a heart breaks no it don’t breakeven)

Oh it don’t break even no
Oh it don’t break even no
Oh it don’t break even no

As always, please leave your song suggestions, stories, and comments below.  I’ll add your song to the playlist if it’s awesome.  Feel free to follow me on Twitter and Facebook.  Thanks for listening! -Allison

    Ugh. Heartbreak.

“Anna Begins” – Counting Crows will always be the very bottom of the barrel, sobbing in a mess on the floor, completely destroyed heartbreak song for me.

But I’m also partial to Christopher Jak’s “Me and Myself,” Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Let Her Cry” (hello, college love who crushed my heart), Athenaeum’s “Away,” Grace Potter’s “Lose Some Time,” Duncan Sheik’s “Barely Breathing,” Jackopierce’s “More Than This” … and about a billion more.

My friend Alison, I couldn’t find a good one last year for my break up with a cheater, so after careful prodding, I wrote my own for my situation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC8sOPF1WP8

  3. Allison Rizk says:

Wow! Amazing suggestions! I especially love the Grace Potter song and added it to the playlist along with Athenaeum and Jackopierce. Christopher Jak’s song is not yet on Grooveshark or I would have added it, too. Thanks for it!!! You rock-

A few months back I was updating my collection when I came across this song that brought back memories of an old flame. It was a few years ago now but the shattering pain of the split was brought back in the first line of this song so much so that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up! A million thoughts running through my head wondering what she was upto now. The song followed the same track of my thoughts and as I listened the pain dwindling I came to the end of the song remembering how the decision back then was the right call and how much I had grown since then emotionally. Truly amazing was the 3 minute emotional rollercoster! You Could Be Happy~Snow Patrol http://bit.ly/dzELCz

At This Moment – great feeling… the original was good but it’s really good on the Crazy Love album by Michael Buble

    What did you think
I would do at this moment
    When you’re standing before me
    With tears in your eyes?
Trying to tell me that you
    Have found you another
And you just don’t love me no more

    What did you think
I would say at this moment
When I’m faced with the knowledge
That you just don’t love me
Did you think I would curse you?
Or say things to hurt you?
Cause you just don’t love me no more

Did you think I could hate you?
Or raise my hands to you?
Now come on, you know me too well
    How could I hurt you
    When darling, I love you
And you know… I’d never hurt you

What do you think, I would give at this moment?
If you’d stay I’d subtract twenty-years from my life
I’d fall down on my knees
Kiss the ground that you walk on
If I could just hold you again

I’d fall down on my knees
Kiss the ground that you walk on, baby
If I could just hold you…again

  6. Allison Rizk says:

I agree! Buble’s version is heart-stopping. Thanks for posting the lyrics…so moving! I always think about Family Ties when Alex P Keaton was saying goodbye to his girl in the train station. :)

  7. Allison Rizk says:

Jamie, that song is so beautiful. Snow Patrol really did that whole album right. Thanks for posting your comment-

  8. Jillian says:

“Burn” by Ray LaMontagne always stops me in my tracks. I tear up every time I hear it–such raw emotion. Seeing someone you used to love with someone else–ugh. But if you’re more mad than sad after a breakup, I always go back to “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. And I’m with JrzyGyrl, “Anna Begins” was the first song that gave me chills. I was 12. Another breakup song for those relationships that end well and you wish each other happiness is “Sunrays and Saturdays” by Vertical Horizon. But go to back to Ray, when my heart hurts, I listen to “Achin’ All the Time” on repeat.

  9. Joyce says:

Having recently endured a break up I have a few good ones to share:

    Paolo Nutini- Rewind
Benjy Davis Project- You Just Know
    Sam Thacker- If You’re Gone
    Chad Perrone- Quit You
    David Cook- Lie
    Will Hoge- Lover Tonight
    Jason Mraz- Sleeping To Dream
Gareth Asher- Somewhere South of Here

  10. Allison Rizk says:

Joyce, thank you so much for the suggestions! I added a few to the Grooveshark playlist. Hope your broken heart is healing nicely!

  11. Allison Rizk says:

Jilly, GREAT suggestions! I added some to the playlist….and duh, why didn’t I put Ray on in the first place? Love you, girl-

  12. Brad Broadrick says:

Here a few I thought were good for your list: There are some surprises on here…

50 Ways To Leave Your Lover – Paul Simon
    Everybody Hurts – R.E.M.
Give Me One Reason – Tracy Chapman
I’m Looking Through You – The Beatles
    Last Goodbye – Jeff Buckley
Song for the Dumped – Ben Folds Five
    Don’t Speak – No Doubt
You Oughta Know – Alanis Morrisette
    Even Now – Barry Manilow
Cry On Demand & Come Pick Me Up – Ryan Adams
You’ll Think of Me – Keith Urban
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues – Elton John

    And here’s the kicker…. Hands down #1
He Stopped Her Loving Today – George Jones

  13. Hey Allison, I love this list. For me, “You can Always Come Home” by Steven Fiore is about as heart wrenching as it gets. He eventually sold the rights to Jason Castro who actually did a decent version, but here’s Steven’s (horrible video – great song)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzCLnt7LRYE

    Other favorites include:
The Damnwells – Like it is
Avett Brothers – If it’s the Beaches
Death Cab for Cutie – Title and Registration
Ryan Adams – Call me on your Way Back Home (actually, almost every RA song)
Wes McDonough – Count me out
Dave Barnes – Sticks and Stones

  14. Jamie Liddell says:

Felt like listening to The Cure today it’s been a while since I had me a Cure moment and when ‘Picture of You’ came on I automatically thought of your list! Love this song…..

I’ve been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they’re real I’ve been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
Remembering You standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in
Holding you close How I always held close in your fear
Remembering You running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and whiter than snow
And screamed at the make-believe Screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage To let it all go
Remembering You fallen into my arms Crying for the death of your heart You were stone white
So delicate lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
    Slow drowned You were angels
So much more than everything Hold for the last time then slip away quietly Open my eyes
    But i never see anything
If only I’d thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I’d thought of the right wordsI wouldn’t be breaking apart
    All my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But i never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
    But always just breaking apart
    My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world
    That I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world That I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apartAll my pictures of you

  15. Bruce says:

Brad nailed it. There has NEVER been a broken heart song better than George Jones’. It’s not just that it’s sad. It says what we all have felt at that moment: I will never love again. That being said, thank you to my amazing and lovely wife for never making me think of that song.

  16. Robin says:

As you know, I love any and everything that oozes out of Matthew Mayfield’s pores – and any one of a dozen or more of his songs can bring me to tears. Still trying to hold on to hope, but you know it’s over? – ‘Maybe Next Christmas’ and ‘The Last Ride’ are spot-on (‘Lying still, I’m not making a sound till you can tell me how you feel, or turn me away.’) Resignation, maybe coupled wih some self-loathing for holding on too long? – doesn’t get any more heart-wrenching than ‘Fire Escape’ (‘I heard the cold wind say, you’re a fool to stay. But I did. I did…no, you’re not home’). Moved on to anger? – ‘Fact or Fable’ practically spits the anger out (‘I bled, I gave everything I had. You changed your mind. You changed my life.’)

Of course, for angry songs, I don’t think it gets much better than Butch Walker’s ‘Best Thing You Never Had’. Marvelous 3′s ‘Cigarette Lighter Love Song’ is another one for when you know it’s over, but haven’t been able to admit it yet.

    Other great ones are
    ‘Cry’ – Angie Aparo
    ‘Long Road’ – Pearl Jam
‘The Sun Will Rise’ – Brendam James (for when I am picking myself up and moving on)

But probably the best broken heart song of all time in my mind is ‘The Last Goodbye’ by Jeff Buckley. ‘I hate to see the love between us die. But it’s over.’. Every single thing about this song is perfection and heartbreak to me.
