Lana Del Rey Bombs on SNL…On Purpose?
Lana Del Rey, the internet sensation touted as one of iTunes Artists to Watch in 2012 made a disastrous spectacle from her first appearance on Saturday Night Live last night. Almost immediately, legions of people have colored the internet blasting Lana’s performance, including celebrities like Juliette Lewis. Lana’s performance was stiff as a nervous school girl with erratic pitch problems, vacant eyes, and awkward attempts at dance moves. Granted, a fresh case of nerves could be the culprit for upstaging the host, Daniel Radcliffe on last night’s performances but check out what happened here.
Could it have been calculated? Profiled by RadioPotato last August, Lana Del Rey has experienced an organically meteoric rise thanks to her early release of her retro-tinged video for “Video Games.” The young 25-year old from New York has been lambasted and praised by critics for her “enhanced” image, her name change (she was born Lizzy Grant), and for her mysteriously disappearing music and videos as her image has been revamped and her music re-released. An interesting cover story detailed the mystery surrounding Lana’s rise in Billboard Magazine.
Del Rey might be absolutely brilliant, though. By nature, the polarizing reactions are going to make people more compelled to watch her even closer in the future. It’s not easy to go on SNL so early in her career and kill it with so little experience before her album is even released. My bet is that Lana’s next move will galvanize the haters and make her into the femme fatale sensation that she is poised to be. She’s got talent. Her music is haunting and you can’t take your eyes off of her. Thirteen hours after broadcasting on SNL, Lana Del Rey’s EP is #2 on the iTunes album charts behind Adele’s 21. Just watch. Lana Del Rey has since deleted her SNL video posts from her Facebook page and posted a teaser video for her upcoming interview. Smart marketing. Smarketing! Her career will only gain momentum. Just watch.

Karmin, early in their career yet with a vast portfolio of live performance music videos on YouTube generating over 175-million views before their first major-label album is released, goes on SNL Feb 11 and will kill it.
I want to bake your potato
Lana did not do terrible, however it was not her best performance. She is a very talented artist and should be recognized as such. Not everyone is going to agree with the kind of music she produces. However, if you are a fan of indie, pop, and darker tunes then you’ll certainly enjoy Lana. She does not have “pop bubbly princess” tunes to her, as a lot of artists today have. However, she is a Queen of her own genre. People should watch Del Rey much more closely now and be prepared to be amazed. Lana does perform live very well actually. I have never heard anyone sound ‘amazing’ on SNL. Her performance has definitely drawn attention to Lana Del Rey, being as it is her first U.S. debut. She will be staring on The Late Show with David Letterman and The Ellen Show in the next few weeks! Keep your eyes peeled music junkies, because Lana is only going to get better!
It was pretty painful to watch. I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. I just hope she can recover from it. We are all human & have bad days, but the unfortunate thing is there are some people who sit & wait for people to have bad/off performances so that they can run them into the ground. It’s sad because she is young & new & people attach these outrageous expectations on artists. I hope Daina is right & she can redeem herself. I really think she can. I also hope Lana isn’t taking all of this to heart…
Lana Del Rey’s performance on SNL was not the best she’s done. If you want to see substantial evidence of this woman’s talent, refer to her performance at Inas Nacht.
Actually, to be frank, I’ve yet to seen an artist that’s done extremely well on SNL. The acoustics of the stage are less than desirable, and would only do a lip-syncing artist some kind of justice; but right away, people want to tag themselves as critics when they have clearly seen only *one* performance an artist has done. Anyone that has kept track of Lana, or has done research, would know that when it comes to only having her voice and an accompanying piano, Lana Del Rey is capable of holding her own better than most of today’s artists.
She’s not the only one with a poor performance on SNL; Robyn, for example, is another phenomenal artist whose “Call Your Girlfriend” performance on SNL wasn’t the greatest, but boy can she sing, as she’s shown in many other performances.
But everyone wants to be biased, and everyone suddenly wants to be a critic like as if there was never an artist on that stage, or any stage, that was nervous and may have had a few hiccups during a performance because of that nervousness.
People need to chill, and look into Lana Del Rey a little more before they feel all high and mighty with trying to bring her down.
