July’s Top 5 Sizzling Summer Songs 2010
The sweltering heat boiling our globe means that the temperature is rising for these hot new acts, too. VOTE FOR YOUR FAVE in July’s Top 5 Summer Songs at the bottom of the post. As always, there’s a nifty little Grooveshark playlist so you can listen to all the songs continuously.
1. “Pretenders” – Lesands – Man, this band is catchy. Remember that series of obscure new wave 1980′s compilation CD’s called “Living in Oblivion?” Yeah, this sounds like a modern adaptation. They’ve got a throwback 80′s style with electronic layers of new wave synth, clean guitars, and driving snare drums with repeated hooks that make their music irresistible. “Pretenders” is gaining in organic popularity and winning votes as a new favorite band. There’s no video for ”Pretenders” yet but you can listen here and watch a video for another one of their synth-heavy gems “EJC.” MySpace | Facebook | Twitter

2. “Sit Down Beside Me” – Patrick Watson and the Wooden Arms – This emotional piano-driven journey into the wonder of just staying a little while longer. The strings, the swell of the cymbals and the gorgeous dance of the piano crescendos into a beautiful song that sounds both rich and delicate. Patrick Watson hails from Canada and is starting to get some serious recognition in America as well as Europe.

3. “Denise” – Clem Snide – All of a sudden, I’m starting to see Clem Snide’s name a lot. This formerly disbanded indie-pop band has re-banded and released The Meat of Life earlier this year. This song is so simple starting off with acoustic guitars and a faint drum beat and then growing more and more luscious. It even has a vintage 60′s sounding tambourine and harmonies that make it such a cute bouncy song. One of my dearest friends name is Denise so I dedicate this one to her.

4. “Everywhere I Go” – Lissie – Why am I just now discovering her? Much like the new sensation Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts” was discovered on the hit dance show “So You Think You Can Dance,” this song was featured on the show as well. Lissie is a midwestern girl living in London and largely adored by the Brits. Sounding similar to Adele with her depth and clear voice, this heart-tugging song uses soft echo effects to paint a picture of solitude and longing. Lissie’s got some pipes!

5. “Gutter Song” – Nic Cowan - An emerging songwriter out of Atlanta, Nic Cowan has been signed to Zac Brown’s record label Southern Ground Records and is captivating audiences around the nation. Tall, dark, and handsome with a mess of curls usually tucked into a cap, he’s got a laid back vibe. But don’t let the chill appearance fool you. His clever songwriting, gruff voice, and attack of his acoustic guitar sends the audience into a tailspin wondering what just happened. He’s GOOD! And his shows and songs are ridiculously FUN! If he’s not on your radar yet, he needs to be.

It was hard to choose between The Pretenders and Nic Cowan, but I couldn’t resist the Marvin Gaye aside.
